ADHD Assessments for Adults

Clarifying lifelong patterns of attention, organization, and executive functioning

When Longstanding Difficulties Need an Explanation

Many adults seek an ADHD assessment after years of wondering why tasks that seem straightforward for other people require so much effort. You may understand what needs to be done but struggle to begin, organize, prioritize, estimate time, follow through, or maintain attention when a task is not immediately engaging.

Some adults have developed effective ways to compensate through structure, urgency, long work hours, reminders, or support from others. These strategies may work until responsibilities increase or circumstances change. At that point, patterns that were once manageable can begin affecting work, education, relationships, finances, routines, or confidence.

An assessment can provide clarity about whether ADHD is the best explanation and identify practical next steps, whether or not a diagnosis is made.

Considering Other Explanations

Attention and executive-function difficulties can have several causes. Anxiety, mood concerns, sleep problems, stress, burnout, learning disabilities, health conditions, and other factors may resemble ADHD or make existing ADHD symptoms more noticeable.

A comprehensive assessment considers these possibilities and examines whether symptoms were present earlier in development, appear across settings, and cause meaningful impairment. This differential approach is important because a diagnosis should explain the overall pattern, not only a few current symptoms.

When broader cognitive or academic questions emerge, additional testing may be recommended. Any proposed change to the scope or cost will be discussed before it is completed.

What the Assessment May Include

The specific measures are selected for the individual, but the process commonly includes:

  • a thorough clinical interview covering developmental, educational, occupational, health, and family history
  • standardized self-report measures of ADHD symptoms and daily functioning
  • collateral information from someone who knows the client well, when available and authorized
  • review of school records, previous reports, or other relevant documentation
  • measures of attention, executive functioning, memory, or cognitive abilities when indicated
  • screening for emotional, learning, sleep, and contextual factors
  • integration of the findings with current diagnostic criteria

No single computerized task, rating scale, or interview determines the outcome. Conclusions are based on the pattern across multiple sources of information.

What You Receive

The report provides a clear explanation of the findings, diagnostic conclusions where appropriate, and recommendations tailored to your goals. Recommendations may address organization, time management, task initiation, environmental supports, treatment options to discuss with healthcare providers, and possible workplace or post-secondary accommodations.

A diagnosis can offer language and insight, but it does not automatically solve the difficulties that led someone to seek assessment. The feedback session focuses on translating the findings into practical priorities and identifying which next steps are most likely to help.

Cost, Report and Timeline

The flat fee for a comprehensive adult ADHD assessment is $1,500.

This includes the intake interview, appropriate testing and questionnaires, scoring and interpretation, a full comprehensive written report, and a follow-up session to review the results and recommendations.

Under most circumstances, clients can expect the completed report within two weeks after testing is finished and all required questionnaires, records, or collateral information have been received.

Further Follow-Up

Some clients want additional support after the assessment. Follow-up may include counselling focused on implementing recommendations, consultation with another professional, assistance understanding accommodation options, advocacy, or preparation for a workplace or post-secondary discussion.

These services are optional, provided only with the client’s consent, and billed separately at the regular hourly rate. Information is not released to employers, schools, family members, or other professionals without appropriate written permission.

Clients may also return later to review how recommendations are working, identify barriers, or adjust strategies as work, education, family responsibilities, and other demands change.

Start With a Free Consultation

If you are wondering whether ADHD, stress, learning differences, or another concern may explain what you are experiencing, schedule a free consultation. We can discuss the questions you want answered, whether assessment is likely to be useful, and what scope would fit your needs.

You do not need to know exactly what kind of assessment you need to get started. We can figure that out together before you make a commitment, with greater confidence and direction.
