Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? You’re not alone. Below are answers to some of the most common things people ask before getting started.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?

No, in Alberta a referral is not needed to see a psychologist.

Our areas of specialization are in helping with anxiety, stress and burnout, neurodivergencies, addictions, relationships, wellness and men’s health issues. If you aren’t sure if we’re a good fit, read through our services or set up a consultation. If it’s not something we can help with, we’ll make sure you get pointed in the right direction.

There is a different answer for everyone, but if things are feeling harder than usual, you’re struggling with making a change that is important to you, or you find that your mood is impacting your relationships, therapy can help. For others, talking through stressors before they become bigger problems is helpful. Sometimes you may not be sure what the issue is, but you would like parts of your life to be better.

The role of a therapist is to help you figure out those changes, then help you plan how to get there. If you aren’t sure if therapy is right for you, book a consultation and we’ll discuss it together.

During the first session we’ll go over initial paperwork, privacy, and clinic policies. We’ll get some background information and learn about who you are, what you like, and your goals for therapy. We’ll answer any of your questions—feel free to write them down and bring them with you!

There is a different answer for everyone, and it depends on many factors. What are your goals for therapy? What is happening in your life right now? Are there things from the past that are impacting your well-being now?

What we do know is that counselling improves well-being. Typically, we’ll start with meeting every week or two, then meet less frequently as we progress. Many people choose to continue doing “maintenance” sessions once their initial goals are reached to ensure changes remain.

Typically, we’ll begin using evidence-based approaches that have the highest rates of success. These will vary based on what you want to achieve, what has worked for you in the past, and your input but most often include CBT, DBT and ACT.

As we get to know each other better, we’ll use some other strategies that are tailored to work for specifically for you

Absolutely! We’ll work with you to meet your goals. You are the expert on yourself, and we’ll rely on your knowledge to be part of the process. Our relationship will depend on both of us being open and honest.

Most sessions are 60 minutes, but some people choose on occasion to have 90 minutes sessions instead. This is especially more frequent in couples or family sessions. If you feel like you need more time, let us know

Yes, therapy is confidential but there are some exceptions. We’ll discuss these in more detail during our first session, and you can also read them on the intake form when you register for your first session. If you have specific questions about confidentiality, book a free consultation and we can talk about it.

We offer in-person sessions at our office in Calgary, and online sessions are available from any location in Alberta. On the booking page you can choose between online or virtual sessions

Sessions are $235 for a 60-minute session. We offer a sliding scale, but spots are limited so book a free consultation to discuss it with your psychologist.

Coverage varies depending on your plan, but mental health benefits typically cover services from registered psychologists. If you’re unsure, we can work together to figure it out during a free consultation.

We require 24-hours notice to cancel or reschedule a session. You can contact us directly at admin@northskycounselling.ca or reschedule on the booking page. Missed sessions will be invoiced at 50% of the session cost.
